App: Creole Translator

1. Overview
Creole Translator ("the App") is a voice translation app that converts speech between Haitian Creole and English. This Privacy Policy explains what data is collected, how it is used, and your rights.
2. Data We Collect
- Audio recordings: When you press the record button, your voice is recorded on-device and sent through our translation service to Groq (with OpenAI as a fallback) for transcription. Our translation service keeps the recording for up to 7 days; if the translation that follows is flagged (the AI reports low confidence, or you rate it 👎), the clip is kept for up to 30 days so our named Creole-speaking reviewers can listen and check the transcription. Clips are stored without any identifier, are never linked to you or your device, and are deleted automatically. A reviewer's corrected transcript may be kept permanently as text. Clips that were not flagged are never reviewed.
- Translation text: Text you type, or text transcribed from your recording, is sent through our translation service to Groq for translation (with OpenRouter/OpenAI as a fallback).
- Translation history: Text results of your translations are also stored locally on your device using Android SharedPreferences. That copy never leaves your device and you can clear it in the App.
- Service logs: Our translation service keeps a technical log of each request — a random identifier generated by the App on your device (not tied to your name, Google account, or advertising ID), the type of request, its time, and its size — for rate limiting, abuse prevention, and usage measurement. Logs never contain the content of your speech or translations.
- Analytics: The App uses Google Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage events (for example, that a translation completed), device type, OS version, and app version. Analytics collection is on by default. Firebase Analytics does not receive the content of your speech or translations. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Advertising data: The App uses Google AdMob to display ads. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data as described in Google's Privacy Policy.
2a. Translation Quality Review
To check and improve translation quality, our translation service keeps a copy of each translation it produces:
- What is stored: the text you submitted for translation (typed, or transcribed from your recording), the translation returned, the direction (Creole→English or English→Creole), which AI provider produced it, and a confidence score the AI assigns to its own answer.
- What is not stored: your voice audio, your name, your account, and any device identifier. Stored translations are not linked to you or your device.
- How long: 90 days, after which they are deleted automatically.
- Who sees them: a small number of named human reviewers who speak Haitian Creole and are authorised by us. They read stored translations to judge whether the AI translated correctly.
- Ratings: if you tap 👍 or 👎 on a translation (and optionally add a comment), that rating and comment are attached to the stored copy of that translation to help reviewers prioritise.
- Corrections dictionary: when reviewers correct a translation, the corrected pair (original text and corrected translation) is kept permanently in our dictionary so that future requests for the same text receive the corrected translation. Dictionary entries contain only the phrase text and its translation, never any identifier.
Please do not submit personal information (names, addresses, account numbers) for translation if you do not want it visible to our reviewers during the 90-day retention period. To have such text removed, contact us (section 9) with the approximate date and the text involved; because stored translations are not linked to you, we need the text itself to locate it.
3. Third-Party Services
The App transmits data to the following third parties:
We do not sell, rent, or otherwise share your personal data with any other parties.
4. Permissions
- RECORD_AUDIO: Required to capture your voice for translation. The microphone is only active while you are holding the record button.
- INTERNET: Required to send audio/text to our translation service and to display ads.
- MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS: Required to manage audio focus during recording and playback.
5. Data Retention
Audio recordings are held in device cache only during active processing and deleted from the device when a translation is complete. Our translation service keeps each recording for up to 7 days, and for up to 30 days when the resulting translation was flagged for review (section 2); clips carry no identifier and are deleted automatically. Translation text is retained by our translation service for 90 days without any identifier for quality review (section 2a), then deleted automatically; reviewer-corrected translations are kept permanently in our dictionary. Translation history text is also stored on your device and can be deleted at any time from within the App. Service logs (metadata only, no content) are retained for operational purposes.
6. Children's Privacy
This App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
7. Your Rights
You may clear all locally stored translation history at any time using the "Clear History" function in the App. Since audio is not stored beyond the immediate processing session, there is no audio data to request or delete. You may ask us to delete a stored translation or dictionary entry containing your text by contacting us (section 9). You can manage ad personalisation via the consent dialog shown on first launch and the "Privacy Options" button in the App's Settings screen.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
