Overview
Creole Translator (“the App”) is a free application for iOS and Android that uses AI services to transcribe and translate speech and text between Haitian Creole and English. Both versions of the App send requests through the same server (“our translation service”), so this Privacy Policy applies to both. It explains what data the App collects, how it is used, and what choices you have.
Audio Data
When you use the App’s recording feature, your voice is captured by your device’s microphone and sent to third-party AI services for processing. Specifically:
- Your recording is sent through our translation service to an AI transcription service: OpenAI for Haitian Creole speech and Groq AI for English speech. If that service is unavailable, the other one is used as a fallback.
- Audio is transmitted over an encrypted HTTPS connection.
- Your recording is kept by our translation service for up to 7 days so that, if the translation that follows is flagged (the AI reports low confidence, or you rate it 👎), the clip can be kept for up to 30 days and listened to by our named Creole-speaking reviewers to check whether it was transcribed correctly. Clips are stored without any identifier, are never linked to you or your device, and are deleted automatically on those schedules. A reviewer’s corrected transcript may be kept permanently as text. Clips that were not flagged are never reviewed.
- Groq AI and OpenAI process audio temporarily to produce results. Please review Groq’s Privacy Policy and OpenAI’s Privacy Policy for details on how they handle submitted data.
Translation Text
Text you type, and text transcribed from your recordings, is sent through our translation service to Groq AI for translation. If Groq is unavailable, OpenRouter (routing to OpenAI) is used as a fallback. Text is transmitted over an encrypted HTTPS connection. See “Translation Quality Review” below for what our service keeps.
Translation Quality Review
To check and improve translation quality, our translation service keeps a copy of each translation it produces:
- What is stored: the text you submitted for translation (typed, or transcribed from your recording), the translation returned, the direction (Creole→English or English→Creole), which AI provider produced it, and a confidence score the AI assigns to its own answer.
- What is not stored: your voice audio, your name, your account, and any device identifier. Stored translations are not linked to you or your device.
- How long: 90 days, after which they are automatically deleted.
- Who sees them: a small number of named human reviewers who speak Haitian Creole and are authorised by us. They read stored translations to judge whether the AI translated correctly.
- Ratings: if you tap 👍 or 👎 on a translation (and optionally add a comment), that rating and comment are attached to the stored copy of that translation to help reviewers prioritise.
- Corrections dictionary: when reviewers correct a translation, the corrected pair (original text and the corrected translation) is kept permanently in our dictionary so that future requests for the same text receive the corrected translation. Dictionary entries contain only the text of the phrase and its translation, never any identifier.
Please do not submit personal information (such as names, addresses, or account numbers) for translation if you do not want it to be visible to our reviewers during the 90-day retention period. If you have submitted such information and want it removed, contact us (see “Contact” below) with the approximate date and the text involved; because stored translations are not linked to you, we need the text itself to locate it.
Service Logs
Our translation service keeps a technical log of each request — a random identifier generated by the App on your device (not tied to your name, Google or Apple account, or advertising ID), the type of request, its time, and its size — used for rate limiting, abuse prevention, and measuring usage. These logs never contain the content of your speech or translations.
Text-to-Speech
When you use the “speak” feature to hear a translation read aloud:
- English text is sent to Groq AI and Haitian Creole text is sent to OpenAI to generate speech audio, depending on the voice you select.
- Text is transmitted over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The generated audio is not stored after playback.
- If you choose the basic (built-in iOS) voice, or play with it after your HD plays run out, speech is generated on your device and no text is sent.

Analytics
The App uses Firebase Analytics (provided by Google) to collect anonymous usage data such as which features are used and crash reports. This helps us improve the App. Firebase Analytics may collect:
- Approximate device type and OS version
- App usage events (e.g., recording started, translation completed)
- Crash logs
Firebase Analytics does not collect the content of your speech or translations. Analytics collection is on by default in the App. Review Google’s Privacy Policy for more detail.
Advertising
The App displays advertisements served by Google AdMob: banner ads, occasional full-screen interstitial ads between translations, and optional rewarded video ads you can choose to watch for extra HD (AI) voice plays. Rewarded ads are never required: a few HD plays are free every day, and the built-in basic voice is always available. AdMob may use device identifiers and other information to serve personalized or non-personalized ads, subject to your App Tracking Transparency (ATT) preference on your device. Microphone Permission
The App requires microphone access to record your speech. You will be prompted to grant this permission the first time you use the recording feature. You can revoke microphone access at any time in your device’s Settings (iOS: Privacy & Security → Microphone; Android: Apps → Creole Translator → Permissions).
Data Retention
- Audio: Not stored on your device after processing. Our translation service keeps each recording for up to 7 days, and for up to 30 days when the resulting translation was flagged for review (see “Audio Data”); clips carry no identifier and are deleted automatically. Groq AI’s and OpenAI’s retention practices are governed by their own privacy policies.
- Translations (quality review): Stored by our translation service for 90 days without any identifier, then deleted automatically. See “Translation Quality Review”.
- Corrections dictionary: Reviewer-corrected translations are kept permanently; they contain only phrase text, never identifiers.
- Translation history: Transcribed and translated text is also saved to your on-device history (up to 50 entries). That copy is stored locally only and you can clear it in the App at any time.
- Service logs: Request metadata (no content) is retained for operational purposes.
- Analytics: Retained by Firebase per Google’s standard data retention settings.
Children’s Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted data through the App, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
Your Choices
- Microphone: Disable in your device’s Settings (see “Microphone Permission”).
- Ad Tracking: iOS — managed via Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, or via Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt on first launch. Android — via the consent dialog shown on first launch and the “Privacy Options” button in the App’s Settings screen.
- Translation history: Can be cleared within the App at any time.
- Stored translations and recordings: You can ask us to delete a stored translation, a kept voice clip, or a dictionary entry containing your text — see “Contact”. Typing to translate instead of recording avoids sending audio, but the text is still stored for quality review as described above.
- AI data consent: You can revoke your consent to share audio with AI services in the App’s Settings screen at any time. Revoking consent will disable the recording and translation features.
Third-Party Services
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
