How to play
Boot the game
Wait for the PIXELON 64 boot screen to finish (about 3 seconds), then either:
- Tap the big yellow ▶ SHIFT + RUN/STOP button, or
- Tap the screen to bring up the iOS keyboard, type
LOAD HOP, hit return, then type RUN and hit return.
Controls
- Swipe up, down, left, or right on the game screen to hop.
- Or use the arrow keys / WASD on any attached keyboard (Bluetooth, iPad Smart Keyboard).
- Tap ESC in the corner (or press Escape) to quit back to the BASIC prompt.
Landscape mode
Rotate your device sideways — the game expands to fill the screen and hides the keyboard controls. Rotate back to portrait to type again.
Rounds and scoring
- Cross the road and river, land in one of the 5 home slots.
- Fill all 5 slots to complete a round (+500 bonus). Next round is a little faster.
- Round 1 runs at 30% speed. Base speed is reached at round 6.
- You start with 3 frogs. Game ends when you run out.
Troubleshooting
The keyboard doesn't come up
Tap the CRT screen (not below it) to focus the input field. On iPad with a hardware keyboard attached, iOS may hide the software keyboard — just use the arrow keys.
No sound
Make sure your device isn't in silent mode. HOP! 8-Bit uses the ambient audio session so it won't fight music you're already playing.
The game is too fast
Round 1 is deliberately slow (30% of base speed). If you skipped ahead by tapping through banners, restart the app.
High score reset
Uninstalling and reinstalling the app removes your high score.
Reporting a bug
When you email, tell me:
- What device you're on (iPhone or iPad model)
- iOS version
- What you were doing when the bug happened
- A screenshot if you can
